The 3 Most Common Issues with Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is easy, but alas—new technology always presents new problemscloud computing

There is no denying the power of cloud computing for modern data storage and sharing. The concept began trending in 2009, despite apprehensions from tech CEOs (like Steve Wozniak) and small businesses alike.  Questions about information security and privacy were the biggest challenges for businesses. Regardless of potential usage problems, cloud computing was an inevitable advancement to the way we work. Now, there are countless cloud providers to choose from, including Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive and DropBox. Don’t be fooled—there are many advantages associated with the cloud, such as:

  • Easy sharing between devices
  • Cost/time efficiency
  • Easy backing-up
  • Simple network drive access
  • Near-unlimited storage

As cloud computing becomes a regular part of IT business integration, we are learning that the cloud may have some considerable problems.

1.       Security/Privacy

The web-based cloud interface obviously leaves more room for security breaches.  The general reaction to cloud security sounds a little something like “every breached security system was once thought infallible” (via Computer Weekly). Without deviating from our cloud devotion, we have to face the usual music. Doing business on a cloud rightfully speeds up productivity of certain employees. IT engineers will work more to secure cloud platforms and address privacy concerns. Companies should seek to train employees on basic web behavior protection. Companies who opt out of training employees on cloud security are plainly asking for a breach.

 2.       Downtime

We all know the “server’s down headache” too well. So what happens when the cloud is down?  Not only do you lose access to important documents, you could also be denied contact to your webmail. In business time, 6 hours can mean thousands in lost productivity. The need for server monitoring systems is becoming an essential IT asset.  trueITpros uses a system we call The Vault. The Vault monitors servers for irregular activity, lag, and security threats 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It also copies the data log every 15-20 minutes, making downtime virtually impossible.

3.       Usage and Control

Keep the technologies coming …or slow it down a bit? With so much new and improved computing designs, adding the cloud to the mix will churn storms of confusion for the not-so-quick-to-adapt users. Large companies who integrate the cloud will need to train employees how to avoid creating deep, unnavigable information silos.  Considering the service is web-based, cloud computing depends on internet connectivity. This makes portability an issue for users who may not always have internet access in their field.

So, who is the best cloud computing service? It’s hard to say. For the most part, they all have the same basic functions and storage space. Most clouds are integrated to link to other services such as email. While there is no denying the cloud’s prowess, there will always be doubts about security, productivity, and usage. trueITpros engineers are standing by to answer questions and relay support at any time.
